๐Ÿ’ธ Specialist Cost

+5% per specialistper city counter40 / 60 / 80 base Civics

Specialist pages list a base price of 40 Civics, but that is only what a city's first specialist costs. Every specialist a city trains makes the next one in that same city cost 5% of the base more, for the rest of the game.

The cost of the next specialist

Civics = base ร— (100 + 5ร—n + city modifiers) รท 100
truncated to a whole number, never below 1
  • base is the Civics price on Rural Specialists and Urban Specialists: 40 for every rural specialist and every Apprentice, 60 for a Master, 80 for an Elder.
  • n is how many specialists this city has produced. Each city keeps its own count, so a new city starts again at the base price.
  • city modifiers are the percentages in the table further down, added together. A Landowners family takes -50% off rural specialists, so a Landowners city with four specialists behind it pays less than the base price.
  • The result is rounded down and never drops below 1 Civics.

What the count does to the price

Find the row for the number of specialists the city has already produced. The columns are the three base prices, without city modifiers. The count keeps going past 10: each further specialist adds another 5% of the base.

What adds to the count

The count only ever goes up.

  • A specialist the city finishes from its build queue
  • Each tier upgrade, so Apprentice, Master and Elder are three counts
  • Specialists the advanced-start setup drops into a new city
  • Specialists a city already holds when the game begins

What doesn't

A free specialist still works its tile and pays yields. It just doesn't raise the price of the city's next one.

  • A specialist granted by an event or any other bonus
  • Wonder free specialists, such as the Jerwan Aqueduct on adjacent Farms
  • A specialist kept when a Worker upgrades the improvement under it
  • Removing a specialist, losing the tile, razing, or losing the city to a rival
  • Specialists trained in your other cities

City modifiers

These add to the count's percentage. The Civics rows change the build price; the Food rows change the up-front Food price instead, which the count never touches. Nothing here changes the Citizen: an urban specialist takes one Citizen from the city, and only when the tile has no specialist to upgrade.

A worked example

A city that has produced six specialists wants a Master Scribe, a 60 Civics specialist. It is a Landowners city, which doesn't help because a Scribe is urban. The modifier total is +30%, so the price is 60 ร— 1.30 = 78 Civics. The same Master Scribe in a new city costs 60.
